The ideal persian

When you decide that the cat of your dreams is a beautiful persian, you still have to choose the type of persian you want. Each persian may satisfy your taste in colour: if you prefer monochrome we would choose, the white, the black, the rust, the cream or the blue(which could resemble the grey). The vast varieties in colour, the shade and markings of the fur will also help you with your decision. When we make a decision to purchase a cat, it is hard to resist a small ball of fur who is staring at you through a glass at the pet store. Try to resist the temptation and inform yourself with a serious persian breeder. The breeder can guarantee the pedigree and the good health of your furture campanion. In all cases, never forget that a cat in good health should be alert and lively. It is best to verify that the eyes, the nose, the ears and the posterior is dry and clean. It is preferable to avoid an animal with parasites such as fleas. The persian kittens thick fur can easily hide these intruders, so it is important to blow on the fur in quite a few different places on the body to verify that there is nothing present. The palate and the gums should be rosy pink in colour, never pale. A vaccination certificate should always be requested without forgetting the vaccinations which should be renewed annually. It is during the first two weeks being together with your cat that the new member of the family will develope its character. A kitten can not be taken away from its mother before it has been vaccinated and never before seven weeks old. First, its excrement must be analyzed to determine if there are any intestinal worms.

It is preferable, and most agreeable, to adopt a kitten that is three to four months old, instead of an adult, because during this period, a bond can be established between the master and the animal. But like we have seen, the persian is a quiet cat, independant with a good character, but at the age of two or three years it will be adapted to its new family. It is important, if at all possible, to assure yourself that the cat has not suffered a tramatic expierence in its past and to learn its personnal habits. At one year old the persian is already an adult and has past the critical stage of development in its life, during which all kittens of this race are more delicate. The males character hardly differs from that of the female, even though often the male persian is more affectionate than the female who is more suspious. The reason being her maternal instinct which pushes her to protect her offspring.

At the moment of purchase, two choices must be determined:

  • Do you intend to show your persian in cat shows or just keep the cat at home ?

  • Do you intend to breed for reproduction ?

  • In both cases, if you desire a champion or a good reproducer, you should look for a cat with an impeccable pedigree. However, if you only desire a beautiful persian to share your life with, tell the breeder that she has magnificant kittens, even though they might not be perfect in the eyes of a show judge, you could get a better deal if you don`t show the cat. This decision will help you decide the sex of the kitten and for the future, determine if you want to have it sterilized or not.

    The sterilization

While waiting for the kitten to reach adult age, it must be taken into consideration what we want to offer the cat. If you are not considering mating the cat, whether it be a female or a male, it is best to have your cat sterilized (spayed or neutered). A cat becomes sexually mature around the age of eight to ten months. If it is a male cat, he could periodically spray urine. If it is a female cat, she will meow, even in the absence of another cat, a cat can call her from far. If you have the intention of putting your cat in a cat show, it is important to know that in all cat shows there exits a Neutered categorie, reserved for sterilized cats. Naturally, the decision to have your cat operated should not be decided upon lightly.

    Feeding

A persian cat is not any less a thief than a street cat when it come to its food. It forgets very quickly its noble origin. The persian is usually fussy, but to prevent feline urine syndrome (urinary track infection or blockage) of the kitten, give it dry cat food only which contains less than 0.09% magnesium (mg). Avoid moist cat food in cans, as it could cause damage to your kittens teeth and gums.
