In spite of their individualism, a cat adores a social life, and accords well with other animals. Some simple rules will permit a cat, dog, rabbit, ect… to live together.

People who love animals, often have several and it's important that every body gets along. It's surprising to see how much a cat can become attached to a dog, for example, don't have any illusions that concern the relations with small animals like a hamster, white mouse, guinea peg, gold fish, ect… a cat is first a predator, so don't give them any such gifts.

The first experiences

Control the instincts:
The behaviour of a cat towards other animals is the behaviour of a cat towards other animal is determined by the beginnings of his life. This crucial period of socialisation of a cat is situated between two and seven weeks, with one phase, "adolescence" with is between six months and one year. This process follows throughout his life, this during his young years the cat will obtain strong bonds. In other words, if a kitten I brought up with a dog or rabbit, he will take in sympathy, in condition that they are not hostile. This scientifically shows that these first experiences for the cat can deviate their natural instincts: a kitten raised with a rat, for example, would not attack this species, even when they reach adult hood.

The adult cat

However, during their development, it becomes more difficult to encourage harmonious relations between the cat and other animals. The exception to this rule is, often the female shows a maternal instinct that surpasses all others. She would also nurse a bunny, a squirrel or a puppy.

Making the presentations:
Dogs and cats can get along together, or at least tolerate each other, if they are introduced with diplomacy to each other. If you have a dog and are contemplating adopting a cat, certain precautions should be taken. Certain dogs have a stronger hunting instinct than others. A dog who is not accustomed to cats risk. Considering the newcomer as an intruder or prey and could be hunted down. If you already have a cat, choose a dog with a calm character. Avoid hunting dogs.

Introducing a kitten to a dog

Proceed in a progressive manner according to the following steps

  • Make certain that the dog has had a good walk, has been fed and is relaxed. The people who are present should remain calm.

  • One person should hold the dog by the collar, while another person has the kitten on their knee's.

  • One person holding the dog, calls the dogs name and approaches the kitten, then demands him to sit. The first step is completed, reward him with hugs and treats.

  • If the dog remains calm, let him smell the kitten, and reward him again for the good behaviour. Repeat these steps several times a day until the two animals are accustomed to each other..

  • You can then leave the kitten loose in the room, always holding the dog on a least. Continue the reward and praise the dog if he doesn't chase the kitten. Never leave them alone for the first couple of weeks and keep a leash on the dog, in case you have to hold him back.

  • Introducing a dog to an adult cat

The introduction with an adult cat is more difficult, especially if the cat has never interacted with dogs, or worse, if he has been chased or frightened by a dog. And adult cat could have been chased. This disaster will enforce the cats fear and will not solve any of your problems. Be cautious and watch closely the reactions and the characters of the animals. Keep the dog within reach during the first encounters. So they can smell and observe one another from a distance. Once this first step is accomplished, continue the steps as for the kitten.

The difference of introducing a cat and a puppy than a dog

This is much easier. Puppies rarely show aggression in front of a cat, and if it's a kitten, they will let their natural curiosity lead them and will adapt to each other more quickly and without fear. A adult cat could be scared of a puppy at first, however, he soon is reassured of his seniority and will maintain this throughout their relationship. Always be watchful, in case the cat is intimidated bye the puppy, and attacks the puppy with his claws, scratching it's nose, or wore it's eyes. Wait for the right time for the introductions, preferrably when the puppy is tired from playing, is fed and calm.
